Looking for a spooky way to get your dancers moving this Halloween? Guardians of the Grave is a Halloween-inspired 5-minute cardio game that brings a little friendly competition, lots of movement, and plenty of laughs to your dance class!

Whether you're planning a Halloween-themed class or simply want to add some seasonal fun to your warm-up, this game is an easy way to get dancers engaged and energized.

What You’ll Need

You only need two simple pieces of equipment to bring this spooky game to life!

Hula hoops: One for each grave you want to create.
Dance scarves: These will become your ghosts! Traditional dance scarves work perfectly for this activity.

Set up your graves, gather your ghosts, and get ready for some Halloween fun.

How to Play Guardians of the Grave

Step 1: Set Up Your Graves

Scatter the hula hoops around your dance space. Each hoop represents a grave, and each grave needs a guardian to protect it!

Place one dance scarf inside each hula hoop. These scarves are the ghosts that the grave diggers will be trying to steal.

Step 2: Choose Your Grave Guardians and Grave Diggers

Divide your class into two groups:

80% Grave Guardians: These dancers stand at a hula hoop and protect the ghost inside their grave.
20% Grave Diggers: These dancers are on a mission to sneak around the room and steal ghosts from the graves!

For example, in a class of 10 dancers, eight will be grave guardians and two will be grave diggers.

Step 3: Protect Your Ghosts!

Once the game begins, the grave diggers must try to snatch the dance scarves from inside the hula hoops without being caught by the grave guardians.

The guardians must stay alert and protect their ghosts, while the grave diggers use their speed, strategy, and sneaky movements to get past the guards.

If a grave digger successfully grabs a ghost without being caught, they have completed their mission!

Keep the game going for five minutes, or until your dancers are full of Halloween spirit and ready to move on to the next activity.

How to Make the Game Even More Fun

Want to add a little extra spooky excitement? Try these variations to keep your dancers on their toes!

Switch roles. After a few rounds, rotate the dancers so everyone gets a chance to be both a grave guardian and a grave digger.

Add spooky music. Put on a Halloween playlist to create a creepy atmosphere and get everyone into character. Think eerie sound effects, Halloween classics, or spooky instrumental music!

Challenge the grave diggers. Encourage them to move quietly, change direction, and plan their approach rather than simply running straight toward a ghost.

Set a time limit. Give the grave diggers 30 seconds or one minute to steal as many ghosts as possible. Count the ghosts collected at the end of the round before resetting the graves and playing again.

Create a Halloween storyline. Encourage your dancers to become their characters! Guardians can dramatically protect their graves, while grave diggers sneak around like they're on a secret mission.
